Sample Itinerary:

Day 1: Arrival in Yellowknife. The rest of the day is free to explore Yellowknife and relax from your travels.

Day 2: Join your chosen daytime activity and browse through local galleries and stores or visit the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre before your evening flight to Hay River. Upon arrival in Hay River pick up your rental vehicle and end the day at Castaway Cottages. You cabin is nestled in the trees but just steps away from the shore and miles-long beach of Great Slave Lake.

Day 3: Visit Hay River’s sights like the Heritage Museum, Fisherman’s Wharf, Old Town, CN Railhead End, and Synchro Lift, and drive out of town to see the Northern Farm Training Institute and K'atl'odeeche First Nation Reserve.

Day 4: Enjoy more than 20 kilometers of walking/hiking trails with scenic vistas, paddle through the arms of the Hay River and into Great Slave Lake, explore spectacular Louise Falls and Alexandra Falls, search for fossilized impressions of an ancient lobe-finned fish in limestone, keep your eyes out for pelicans, sand hill cranes and many other bird species, and end the day with a round of golf.

Day 5: Today you will drive from Hay River to Yellowknife (approx. 500 km). Stop enroute to see the First Nation’s communities of Kakisa and Fort Providence, stunning Lady Evelyn Falls, the Deh Cho Bridge, and North Arm Territorial Park. Chances are high that Wood Bison and other wildlife can be seen during the drive. Enjoy your evening in Yellowknife.

Day 6: Departure day.

Optional modifications available:

Fly back to Yellowknife instead of driving back, hotel accommodation in the town centre of Hay River.

Castaways Cottages: Located close to the community of Hay River, nestled along the southern shores of the Great Slave Lake, with 15 acres of beach front property, guests can relax and enjoy the 24 hour sun in the summer, or the Aurora during the fall time and winter months. Self-contained cottages are equipped with full bathrooms and kitchen or kitchenette, and each have their private picnic table and fireplace. Larger cottages are a guests’ home away from home while the smaller cabins are cozy and offer everything that one needs for a comfortable stay. The beach is just steps away for endless walks, swimming, paddling, or unobscured Aurora viewing.

Compared to our Yellowknife packages, a trip to Hay River offers the most flexibility and slow pace vacation as we don’t schedule guided activities in advance; guests are free to explore at their own pace, with added independence of a rental vehicle.

*Aurora viewing from mid August thru early October. Tours in Yellowknife can be added at additional cost.
